New Solidworks tool: Mechanical Conceptual

At SolidWorks World 2014 in San Diego, Dassault SolidWorks made an announcement about new product SolidWorks Mechanical Conceptual (SWMC).

SolidWorks Mechanical Conceptual, powered by Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE Platform, gives you an instinctive, powerful modeling environment focused on the four key elements of conceptual design:

  • CONCEPTUAL Rapidly create and evolve your concepts the way you want without design barriers, and automatically capture your ideas to use anytime in the future.
  • INSTINCTIVE Design the way you think with agile, instinctive design tools in a structureless modeling environment with direct editing.
  • SOCIAL Use familiar social collaboration tools in an interactive environment to harness the collective intelligence of your company, customers, and vendors.
  • CONNECTED Enhance collaboration with automatically saved design iterations to keep data safe, up-to-date, and accessible anytime, anywhere.

Really interesting tool, yet it is still Dassault System and their policy is not compatible with open source project. This new product is not yet released but it seems it will be really expensive $249/user/mth ($2998/user/year) !! …

The idea of the cloud through the software is very good. But create many negative points:
1 The cost of the software. Who will pay? the chief of the project? (since he oblige us to use it if we want to works on the project)
2. Also it force us to works on proprietary operating system (since it just works with apple or windows).
I understand the benefit of that very powerful software
But the price of the sacrifice of our freedom, way of works and privacy is very expensive.
