I do not know all the details but it seems possible for Fab labs to obtain free Solidworks licenses. Therefore it should be easier (or more legal ;)) for some of you to work with the Poppy mechanics source files 
Dassault Systemes SolidWorks Corporation is a partner of the Fab Foundation, providing SolidWorks software through sponsorship of labs in MIT’s global Fab Lab network. If you are an official fab lab in the network (listed on the Fablabs.io website) or a Fab Academy site, you are elegible for sponsorship.
